Founded in 2008, ProsperityME is a growing 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Portland, Maine. ProsperityME empowers, through education and counseling, members of refugee and immigrant communities to invest in themselves to build financial stability, careers, businesses, and wealth.

ProsperityME offers financial education services including financial literacy courses, one-on-one financial counseling and coaching. We also provide support for higher education, security deposit assistance for housing, small business counseling, and workforce development through partnerships with local businesses. ProsperityME’s services are open to all refugees, immigrants, asylees, and other individuals with low-income in Greater Portland, Lewiston/Auburn, and York County in Maine.

Accountant Job Description
The accountant is responsible for the daily accounting and compliance operations of ProsperityME including production of periodic financial reports, payroll support, billing, AP/AR, maintenance of a system of accounting records, and controls designed to ensure accuracy of the company’s financial position in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Accountant Responsibilities

Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures to ensure accurate and complete accounting records

Ensure all fiscal activities are in conformity with GAAP.

Enter revenue in appropriate database(s), including donor database.

Prepare and execute bank deposits.

Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable

Reconcile accounts (checking, money market, credit cards, and individual programs).

Prepare financial reports and generate reports for grant reporting.

Allocate expenditures.

Establish and maintain appropriate internal control safeguards

Maintain licensing and insurance
-
Develop purchasing policies, and identify needs, and purchase equipment and supplies.

Conduct lease negotiations and maintain landlord relations.

Develop internal practices leading to well-organized, clean, and pleasant working conditions.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, and Conditions:
Required:
-
Bachelor’s or Associates Degree in finance or accounting and/or equivalent experience.

Experience working for a nonprofit organization preferred.

Experience using QuickBooks Online.

Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal.
-
Ability to communicate effectively in English.
-
Proficiency in basic online tools such as Outlook, Excel and database applications.

Ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently and within deadlines.

Ability to act independently within limits of authority and reach appropriate conclusions.

Willingness to advance relevant skills and knowledge.

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and logical reasoning.

Current driver’s license and/or ability to travel to meetings and events.

Willingness to undergo criminal background check.
Preferred:
-
Credentialing in finance, human resources, or other business functions.

Ability to speak language(s) in addition to English.
